La Paz & Cabo: The Sea of Cortez

The Sea of Cortez earned its nickname, the aquarium of the world, the honest way: by being absolutely packed with life. Our Baja week started in laid-back La Paz, where the desert meets impossibly blue water, and wound down to the dramatic headlands of Cabo at the very tip of the peninsula. In between were sea lions, big fish, and the easy magic of the Baja coast.

Day by day

Days 1-4

La Paz and the islands

We based ourselves in La Paz and spent our days out on the water among the rust-colored islands of the Sea of Cortez. The highlight is always the sea lion colony, where curious, acrobatic youngsters spin and tumble around snorkelers and divers, and October brings the chance of the gentle giants that gather in the bay: whale sharks, cruising the shallows.

Days 5-7

Down the peninsula to Cabo

We made our way south to Cabo, trading the quiet of La Paz for the dramatic granite headlands at the very end of Baja, where the Sea of Cortez meets the Pacific. Easy days, sunset views over the famous arch at Land's End, and the laid-back rhythm of the Baja coast.

Days 8-10

Last of the Baja sun

We savored the final stretch of desert-meets-sea before the trip home, sun-soaked and rested, already dreaming of a return to the aquarium of the world.

Tumbling sea lions, the promise of whale sharks, and the raw beauty where the desert plunges into the Sea of Cortez. La Paz and Cabo are Baja at its very best, wild and warm in equal measure.
