South America: Buenos Aires and a Patagonian Fjords Expedition

This was a true trip of a lifetime, pairing the passion and polish of Buenos Aires with one of the wildest sea journeys on Earth. We began amid the tango halls and grand cafes of the Argentine capital, then flew to the very bottom of the continent to sail an expedition route around Cape Horn and into the remote Chilean fjords.

Day by day

Days 1-3

The passion of Buenos Aires

We dove into Buenos Aires headfirst: a food and wine tour through its neighborhoods, the brightly painted streets of La Boca, the grandeur of Recoleta, world-famous steak, and an evening of tango in a historic cafe. A city that hums with life from morning to well past midnight.

Days 4-5

To the end of the world

We flew south to Ushuaia, the southernmost city on Earth, and boarded our expedition ship. As we slipped out into the Beagle Channel, the city lights faded and the raw, windswept wilderness of Patagonia took over.

Days 6-12

Cape Horn and the Chilean fjords

This was the heart of it: rounding legendary Cape Horn, where the great oceans collide, then threading days of glacier-carved Chilean fjords. Calving glaciers, snow-dusted peaks, condors overhead and the deep quiet of one of the planet's last great wildernesses, including the icy spectacle of Garibaldi Fjord.

Days 13-20

Journey north and farewell

The voyage wound back toward civilization through ever-changing southern scenery before the long, contented journey home from the bottom of the world.
