Fiji: New Year's in Paradise
There is nowhere quite like Fiji to ring in a new year. We spent the holidays on the north coast of Viti Levu, perched at the edge of the Bligh Water, widely called the soft-coral capital of the world. Days were full of color and current, evenings full of Fijian warmth, and the whole group counted down to midnight with sand between their toes.
Day by day
Days 1-2
South to the islands
We made the long, happy haul across the Pacific, lost a day to the date line, and arrived to the green hills and turquoise shallows of Fiji's north coast. A welcome check-out dive shook off the travel and got everyone dialed in for the reefs ahead.
Days 3-7
Diving the Bligh Water
This is soft-coral country, and it delivered. Boat dives on alternating two and three-tank days dropped us onto reefs draped in electric soft corals and swirling with fish, with easy beach diving right out front for anyone who couldn't get enough. A sunset cruise capped one perfect day on the water.
Days 8-10
Ringing in the new year
We spent the last day of the year doing what we came for, then gathered to welcome the new one Fijian style, with good food, good company, and a midnight toast under a sky full of stars. A few more dives sent us off before the journey home.
