Belize Barrier Reef & Island Exploration

There is a specific kind of magic that happens when you land on the sandy airstrip of San Pedro. The air is salty, the pace is slow, and the golf carts outnumber the cars ten to one. Our November journey to Belize was more than just a dive trip; it was a deep dive into the soul of the Mesoamerican Barrier Reef. With a group of 28 adventure-seekers, we took over a slice of paradise, balancing the thrill of the 'Big Blue' with the warmth of local island hospitality. From the bubbles we blew on the reef to the mud we splashed in the jungle, this was a week of pure Belizean 'Un-Belize-able' moments.

Day by day

Day 1 & 2

The Journey to San Pedro

The adventure began with flights from across the US, converging in Belize City before the iconic puddle-jumper flight over the turquoise shallows to Ambergris Caye. We settled into our beachside home-base, just steps from the water. The evening was all about reunions and new introductions over welcome drinks and appetizers, setting the stage for the week of diving ahead.

Day 3

Bubbles and Barrier Reefs

Our first day of diving took us to the world-renowned reef just offshore. We eased into the rhythm with two morning tanks and a third in the afternoon. The marine life didn't disappoint, with reef sharks and curious turtles greeting us at every turn. We wrapped up the day with a group dinner at a local favorite, enjoying the first of many island-inspired meals.

Day 4

Island Exploring via Golf Cart

After our morning dives, we traded our fins for four wheels. We set out on a group golf cart expedition to explore the northern reaches of the island. We visited the local croc pond, stopped at breathtaking remote beach areas, and converged at a unique shipping-container food park for snacks and sunset views. The day ended with a festive 'Martini Monday' and a multi-course dinner highlighting local catch and coconut-infused flavors.

Day 5

Catamarans and Marine Parks

We started with an early dive set to beat the crowds, returning just in time for our private catamaran charter. We sailed to a historic marine park, snorkeling through vibrant coral gardens and the famous Shark Ray Alley, where nurse sharks and stingrays glide right alongside you. After a taco bar lunch on deck and a stop at a neighboring island for tarpon feeding, we sailed home into a spectacular Caribbean sunset.

Day 6

The Blue Hole & Beach BBQ

An ambitious group set out for the bucket-list Blue Hole excursion, while others enjoyed the lush local reefs. The afternoon was for relaxation, boutique shopping, and local ice cream. We gathered in the evening for a quintessential Belizean beach BBQ. With live music playing and tables set in the sand, we feasted on lobster, fresh fish, and key lime pie under the stars.

Day 7

Yoga, Reefs, and Night Dives

We began the day with a restorative vinyasa yoga session on the beach. Following our final morning of boat diving, the group enjoyed a lazy 'pool float' afternoon. As the sun went down, we geared up for a night dive to see the reef's nocturnal transformation. We toasted to our final dives with a seafood celebration at a town staple known for its 'cook your catch' hospitality.

Day 8

Mayan Ruins and Jungle Rivers

We left the ocean behind for a full-day mainland adventure. A private speedboat whisked us to the mainland where we explored the ancient Mayan ruins of Xunantunich. After soaking in the history, we soared through the rainforest canopy on zip-lines and ended the day floating through an underground river system on cave tubes. It was the perfect high-adrenaline finale to our trip.

Day 9

Homeward Bound

Our final morning was a mix of birthday celebrations and bittersweet goodbyes. We shared one last island breakfast before boarding our small planes back to the mainland, carrying the salt and soul of Belize back home with us.

From the travelers

The attention to detail and the balance of high-octane diving with genuine island culture made this one of the best trips I've ever been on. I can't wait for the next adventure.

An SXT Traveler

Sailing back on the catamaran with a drink in hand after snorkeling with sharks is a memory I'll keep forever. Pure magic.

A Group Participant

Belize has a way of getting under your skin. Whether it was the silhouette of a reef shark against the deep blue, the laughter shared on a catamaran, or the quiet awe of standing atop a Mayan temple, this trip reminded us why we travel together. We didn't just see a destination; we experienced a community. Until next time, Belize, stay salty!
