Dominican Republic: New Year's in Punta Cana
Some New Year's escapes are all about slowing down, and Punta Cana is built for exactly that. We rang in the year on the powder-white sand of the Bavaro coast, with warm turquoise water out front, a few island adventures mixed in, and nothing more urgent on the schedule than deciding which beach to watch the sunset from.
Day by day
Days 1-2
Landing in Punta Cana
We arrived on the Dominican coast and let the warmth take over, settling into the easy beach rhythm of the Bavaro shore, where the Caribbean rolls in gentle and clear and the palm shade is never far away.
Days 3-4
Islands and caves
We broke up the beach days with a little adventure: a boat out to Isla Catalina with its bright shallow reef, and a visit to the Cave of Wonders, an underground gallery of stalactites and ancient rock art tucked into the limestone of the interior.
Day 5
A Caribbean New Year
We saw out the old year with toes in the sand and welcomed the new one under a warm Caribbean sky, the whole group raising a glass to the year ahead.
Days 6-8
Last of the sun
A few more unhurried days of beach, water and Dominican hospitality rounded out the escape before the journey home.
From the trip

Powder sand, warm water, a couple of island adventures, and a relaxed Caribbean New Year. Punta Cana is the kind of place that lets you exhale and simply enjoy the turning of the year.
