Expedition to the Seventh Continent: Antarctica & Buenos Aires
There is a specific kind of magic that happens when you cross the Drake Passage and the first icebergs appear like floating cathedrals on the horizon. This journey wasn't just about reaching the bottom of the map; it was about the contrast between the vibrant, steak-and-tango-filled streets of Buenos Aires and the profound, humbling silence of the Antarctic wilderness. We set out to witness the raw power of nature, and the Seventh Continent delivered in every way imaginable, showing us a world where nature is king and we are merely observers.
Day by day
Day 1-2
Gateway to the South: Buenos Aires
The adventure began in the 'Paris of the South.' We spent our first days immersed in the eclectic neighborhoods of Buenos Aires, from the historic Plaza de Mayo and the colorful streets of La Boca to the sophisticated avenues of Recoleta. The city's energy, fueled by world-class dining and the lingering notes of tango, provided a vibrant starting point before we headed toward the quiet of the poles.
Day 3
Embarking from the End of the World
A flight south brought us to Ushuaia, the capital of Tierra del Fuego and the southernmost city in the world. Nestled between the Martial Glacier and the Beagle Channel, this frontier town served as our final port of call. We embarked on our expedition vessel, settling into our cabins and preparing for the legendary journey across the Southern Ocean.
Day 4-5
Rites of Passage: The Drake Crossing
Crossing the Drake Passage is a rite of passage for every polar explorer. We spent two days navigating these famous waters, attending lectures at the onboard Science Center to learn about the history, glaciology, and marine biology of the region. Between briefings, we found time to relax in the spa and watch the horizon for the first signs of the ice.
Day 6
The First Blue Ice: South Shetland Islands
The sight of the South Shetland Islands marked our arrival. These islands are a haven for wildlife, and we were greeted by colonies of Chinstrap, Adelie, and Gentoo penguins. The air was crisp, and the beaches were shared with Weddell and Antarctic fur seals, signaling that we had truly entered the realm of the wild.
Day 7-9
Deep into the Gerlache Strait
We spent several days exploring the stunning Gerlache Strait. This is the Antarctica of dreams: looming glaciers, icebergs the size of city blocks, and a stillness broken only by the crack of shifting ice or the blow of a whale. We took to the water for ice cruising and landings, witnessing the sheer scale of the frozen continent up close while leopard seals patrolled the waterline.
Day 10-11
Reflections on the Southern Ocean
As we turned back north to recross the Drake, the mood was one of quiet reflection. Our heads were filled with a kaleidoscope of memories, the blue of the ice, the playful antics of penguin chicks, and the vast, untouched landscapes. It was a time to sift through photos and enjoy the final moments of shipboard life.
Day 12-13
From Ice to the Edge of the World
We returned to Ushuaia for disembarkation. Walking the banks of the Beagle Channel one last time, we felt the spirit of the farthest corner of the world. After a flight back to the mainland, we transitioned from the sub-zero temperatures of the south back to the warm, summer air of Buenos Aires.
Day 14
The Heart of Palermo: A Culinary Finale
Our final full day was a celebration of Argentine culture. We explored the trendy neighborhood of Palermo Viejo, diving into a culinary tour that highlighted the best of the region: authentic empanadas, world-renowned steaks, and artisanal ice cream, all paired with exquisite local wines. It was the perfect, flavorful end to an epic journey.
Day 15-16
The Long Journey Home
With a final stroll through the parks and plazas of the city, we made our way back to the airport. The journey from the Seventh Continent is long, but as we flew north, we carried the profound silence and immense beauty of the Antarctic with us.
From the trip

From the travelers
“Nothing prepares you for the sheer scale of the ice. It’s like another planet, and the silence is something you can actually feel.”
“The contrast between the energy of Buenos Aires and the stillness of the south was perfectly balanced. A truly seamless adventure.”
Returning from the ice is always bittersweet. You leave a piece of your soul among the glaciers and bring back a perspective that only the vastness of Antarctica can provide. From the first penguin sighting to the last glass of Malbec in Palermo, this was an expedition that will stay with our travelers for a lifetime.
